A Nordic interior is usually characterized by the black and white color scheme, minimalist interior and sometimes shabby chic details. This Stockholm apartment is right one of these. Simple and chic Nordic style is inspiring, timeless, with well-defined lines. Look: the style chosen is minimalist with industrial touches; here the black and white scheme is rarely diversified with the help of light gray, beige and natural wood. White walls throughout the apartment give a light and airy feeling and together with black furniture they create a perfect balance. Strong contrasts attract attention and they are softened with natural wood pieces and light gray accessories. The terrace is on the contrary very colorful, and if the owners crave some color, they may go there.

Matsudo Mansion Minimalist Tokyo Apartment by BAKOKO
A great interior design renovation and refurbishment has been created by people at BAKOKO, an international design studio based in Tokyo, Japan. The designers have transformed this small 400 sq. ft typical ‘mansion’ apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo into their new home.
The transformation of this typical ‘mansion’ apartment on the outskirts of Tokyo demonstrates the adaptability of Japan’s post-war housing stock for providing affordable accommodation to the next generation of city dwellers.
Guided by the idea of a clean, bright, modern home that serves as a place to work and a place to rest, Townsend and Ohtsuki from BAKOKO have created this modern-minimal flat with an optimum use of space. What makes the Matsudo mansion really unique are the small luxurious details – things such as the tatami mat rest area, the Hinoki wood decking in the bathroom and the kitchen’s overhead garden make this contemporary home stand out. Two of the central doors slide apart to reveal a hot pink desk as well as a full length mirror. The key to the live/work lifestyle is being able to shut one’s work away and out of sight at the end of a hectic day.
The tatami area is not only a space for meditation, occasional dining, and entertaining. Come bedtime, a futon can be unfolded from the closet, thus saving space. The illuminated box along one wall holds nighttime reading material and doubles as a reading light and bedside table. The timber ’sonoko’ (decking) and bathtub surround are made from Hinoki wood.

Donna Karan’s Manhattan Apartment
Everybody knows who Donna Karan is. It’s a woman who built her enormous fashion empire in less than a decade on one extraordinarily simple idea: If she needs a particular item of clothing – a bodysuit, a wrap skirt, a chiffon blouse, a longer jacket – then every other woman needs it, too. Donna Karan’s Manhattan apartment is decorated in Zen style. “New York City inspires and fuels everything I do,” says Donna Karan. Minimal in structural and decorative elements, the space has just enough layered textiles and organic elements to create an inviting space for private or more public and social gatherings. The black and white color palette provides a modern and sleek backdrop for the more personally captured moments selected and learning in clustered frames. I like the simple colors and furniture; it’s a feeling like we are in the East. Serving as resting spot for collected artifacts, sitting mats, or even as a step into the next room – it creates a modern line visual and acts a multifunctional design form.
